Skultuna was founded in the Swedish town of the same name in 1607 by King Karl IX of Sweden as a brass foundry – part of his long held plans for an active profitable Swedish brass industry. Refining copper into brass would reduce imports of brass and increase income from exports. The King had a man sent off on the Crown's business to find a suitable location for a brass foundry; the choice fell on Skultuna, where the Svartån brook provided sufficient waterpower. Charcoal was readily available and the copper mine at Falun was close by, a perfect location.

Today, over four centuries later, the company still resides in the very same place in Skultuna. From the beginning it was about producing works of the highest quality and today Skultuna, as one of the oldest companies in the world, is still producing works of the highest design and production quality. Skultuna has continuously collaborated with renowned designers dating back from 1895 to present day, from pioneers of Swedish design to contemporary designers. Today Skultuna strives to creative modern antiques, always with that same sense of quality, function and design.
