Handpainted Wooden Dolls

Cheerful and without doubt fun, the story behind these characters is just as colourful.

Alexander Girard, one of the leading figures in postwar American design, created a whole host of characters for his own house that were inspired by his passion for folk art.

Part sculpture, part toy, there’s something unapologetically joyful in these pieces, based on originals from Girard’s estate that are held by the Vitra Design Museum. Each one is painted by hand, with colours and patterns that never fail to convey personality and a kind of liveliness.

This video shows some of the skilled work that goes into each and every one.

"I am a reasonable and sane functionalist tempered by irrational frivolity."
